My name is Alex and I’m addicted to travel.
I’m a Type A, hyper-organized person. I love details and logistics; schedules and plans; and lists and agendas. And that’s also probably why I love turning it all off and sitting outside in nature.
I love the up-front work of coordinating, booking, and reserving all to enjoy the present moment while actually on vacation. I’ve gotten so good at planning vacations that at a certain age, my mom handed over the reins and let me plan our family summers. And my mother is no easy critic.
Growing up, my parents would load my sister and me into our RV and we would spend three weeks road-tripping from my hometown of Miami all the way the east coast. I loved all the exploring we got to do on those trips, from historic cities to national parks.
We would travel the Southeast in our RV, stopping at National Parks along the way. Each time we crossed a state border, I would make my dad pull off the highway and my mom would jump out of the RV with me to snap my picture by the state welcome signs. By the time I left for college, I had 11 states under my belt and my addiction to check them all off began. Now, Shane is my lucky photographer.
Every moment I could take a vacation, I would try to tick off another state. I spent my 20s traveling the United States and I hit a big milestone in June 2022: All fifty states by 30! This blog will take you along my adventures to each new state and share my secrets to what makes each destination special.
My love of cities and parks is also why I became an urban planner. I loved understanding, planning, and visiting these types of places and wanted a hand in creating and maintaining them. After graduate school and three years as a professional urban planner, I got tired of sitting behind a desk. I would spend the workday browsing Pinterest travel posts or planning trips for my boyfriend, Shane, and me to go on. I would come home every day with some elaborate idea of where we could fly or drive to see things we’d never seen before. And that sweet man would agree to my plans 75% of the time. How lucky am I? Realizing that I sat at work spending more hours travel planning than urban planning, longing for the days to be my own boss, and be the master of my own time, I finally decided to take the jump.
Somewhere Someway will chronicle Shane and my adventures and hopefully inspire you to travel to these beautiful places, too!
With this blog, I hope to share some of those experiences with you and help you create those memories for yourself.
